Max McNown Reimagines the Emotional “Night Diving” with Cameron Whitcomb
“Night Diving,” one of the best tracks off Max McNown’s LP by the same title, has been given new life thanks to the addition of Canadian country singer-songwriter Cameron Whitcomb. “Night Diving” is a track that explores the narrative of addiction and its cyclical trajectory. Whitcomb’s raspier vocals sonically exemplify these throes, the clawing of need and fixation to the point of near-collapse, imbuing the track with a sharper edge.
The video itself is a work of art, with McNown and Whitcomb pictured in a pool, darkness surrounding them both. McNown portrays quiet devastation, stillness, and self-reflection while Whitcomb is an emotional wrecking ball, thrashing his body and trembling with rage and longing, desperate for resolution. Their differing, blended vocals create standout harmonies, blanketing the track with a beauty belying its lyrics.
On Whitcomb’s contribution, McNown says,
“One of the things I respect above all else is authenticity and honesty in music, and Cam is the epitome of that. When I started thinking about a feature on that song, I knew there was no better person than Cam to join me. He gave it so much energy and his voice is so distinct, and now the song has a whole new life to it.”
Whitcomb responds,
“When Max first pitched the song to me, I barely got halfway through the first verse and called him back immediately. I think this song is honest and special, and I’m honored to sing alongside an incredible artist and human being on such an amazing record.”
